FAQs
General
Our products are designed to work on all lawns providing our guides are followed.
Usually the majority of results are seen within 4 weeks but if you don't have a better lawn within 6 weeks, get in touch with our team and we will send you your money back or provide the products and advice to make it right.
We will need the following to provide this service:
- Clear, dated before and after photos.
- Overview of your ground preparation as it can differ for each lawn.
- Confirmation of your watering schedule (how many times watered per day and for how many minutes).
Terms & Conditions:
- If it has been over 6 weeks since you have applied then unfortunately we cannot honour the money back guarantee as there are so many things which can happen to a lawn which our outside of our control but we are still happy to advise you on how to get it sorted.
- If your renovation has had significant success and there are just a few bare patches then regular mowing or overseeding with Stronger Roots Grass Seed will help it thicken up. We can't give a full refund for a majority success but you may be entitled to additional products or a partial refund if you have significant bare patches as long as you provide the information above and we assess that it is not down to issues with the preparation, application or aftercare.
- Weeds can appear in your lawn at random and can be dealt with from Week 8 with a selective herbicide such as Weedol for Lawns. Our seed is regularly tested by APHA (a governmental organisation) for purity and germination rate and it does not contains any weed seeds. Weed seeds can blow over at random into your lawn, already be present in the soil or be present in topsoil that you have used so our money back guarantee does not apply to weeds in your lawn after renovation.
- Lawn diseases such as red thread cause your lawn to turn yellow/brown/red and are due to weather conditions (particularly warm and wet weather) and/or soil condition. Our renovation packs cannot account for lawn diseases down the line nd therefore do not apply to our money back guarantee. You can treat a lot of lawn diseases with a high nitrogen fertiliser application such as our Summer Thriver Fertiliser or our Greener Growth Fertiliser and the disease will grow out over a few mows.
- Fungus appearing in the lawn are not included in our money back guarantee because they can appear at random and are not a result of using our products. They are often more common in healthy soils and appear more frequently during periods of warm, wet weather. For the majority of fungi you can simply pick them out before mowing and they will eventually stop coming back. You can also try aerating the soil to improve the flow of water so they are less likely to return.

Our products are all child & pet friendly and non-harmful once applied and dried. However we do recommend keeping pets and children off the lawn for 3 hours post-application to give the products time to absorb.
For Deeper Green Iron Sulphate (an irritant in its powder form before diluting for application), we recommend to allow 24 hours before using the lawn as it can stain hard surfaces. This avoids walking across the lawn while it is still wet and walking it inside or onto patios.
Also, we recommend to keep lawn usage to an absolute minimum for at least 4 weeks after seeding to allow the new grass to germinate and grow. So it might mean some more walks for a few weeks if you have a dog!
We sell the majority of our products individually as well as in our packs. You can take a look here at our full range.
We recommend to apply seasonal specific fertilisers 8 weeks after seeding your lawn to ensure that it continues to thrive throughout the year. We have packs available for each season which can be found here or also available individually.
If you need to get rid of weeds then apply a selective herbicide such as Weedol for Lawns 8 weeks after seeding.

Result issues
Sorry to hear this!
Has it been 4 weeks? If not, ensure you are watering 1-2 times daily at least (if it hasn't rained) to keep the ground constantly moist. In hot and dry summers you may even need to water 3 times a day.
If the seed is sitting on the surface then check the seed to soil contact as this is crucial for germination.
After week 4 your lawn will still continue to thicken out a lot through regular mowing as it takes 8 weeks for grass to fully establish all its leaves. So if it's a few thin areas/patches here and there it will more than likely come good on its own.
If after 4 weeks there are significantly patches it may require additional seeding. There are many reasons it may have not germinated (e.g specific additional prep needed for your lawn, watering schedule, harsh or unsuitable weather, birds eating the seed, etc.) Please send us photos to [email protected] with an outline of your watering schedule, before & after photos and close ups of the patches and we'll help you out.
Common lawn problems
If you have moss, apply iron sulphate first then wait 7-14 days for it to fully turn black. Rake out the dead moss and dispose. Then you can seed/apply The Lawn Pack to fill in any bare areas and thicken out the whole lawn. If your lawn is particularly sparse after raking out the moss then consider using The Lawn Pack Plus. Both packs contain iron sulphate and the full iron sulphate guide is here.
Apply a selective herbicide such as Weedol for Lawns across your lawn and the majority of types of weed will die in a few weeks. Leave 6 weeks after applying a selective herbicide before seeding and don't apply on grass which is less than 8 weeks old.
If your lawn has tonnes of weeds then you can apply a herbicide containing glyphosate which will also kill the grass. Wait 2 weeks and rake out all the dead debris then start your lawn from scratch with The Lawn Pack Plus. More info about starting from scratch here.
Prevention
GreenUMs or Dog Rocks will neutralise the ammonia in your pets urine which will prevent any lawn scorches from their wee. Keep them in the water overnight to make sure that they are effective. Some pet owners find they need to try a few brands before they find one which is best.
Alternatively people have success with training their pets to not wee on the lawn and provide a separate area for their pets to use. Easier said than done though!
Remedial Action
Rake out all scorched areas to leave only loosened exposed soil. This is key as this scorched grass will not recover if left. Apply The Lawn Pack using our guides. Follow our watering schedule for the next 8 weeks. Then enjoy your lawn!
A course of 3 ant nematodes followed by a final application of Ant Stop applied deep into their nests should fix it. Get into the nest by loosening the soil using a garden fork, trowel or similar.
When mounds appear on the lawn brush them away when you see them to prevent them from getting too big.
Our seed mix in the pack is not specifically designed to be shade tolerant but does perform well in shaded areas provided there is some sunlight throughout the day. This is because it contains a high percentage of tetraploid ryegrass which puts down 4 root systems instead of 1, making it more resilient than usual mixes.
However if you are particularly concerned about the shade or if it receives no sunlight at all then we would recommend to look for some specifically shade tolerant seed mixes online.
Red thread needs to be treated with a high nitrogen fertiliser to grow it out then it will go after a few mows.
Suitable fertilisers are our Greener Growth Fertiliser or our Summer Thriver Fertiliser included in The Summer Pack.
The Lawn Pack contains a low nitrogen fertiliser for seeding so ideally wait until this isn't still active in the soil (week 8-12).
If the situation doesn’t improve from the fertiliser (it usually does) then you can look at a fungicide such as Provanto.
You will have to deal with leatherjackets or chafer grubs before doing any renovation work.
Either treat with leatherjacket/chafer grub nematodes or use the black sheet method.
Black sheet method:
Water the lawn heavily. Apply a black sheet over the lawn overnight (Screwfix sell them fairly cheap). In the morning they’ll have come to the surface and you can rake them up. Repeat until satisfied. There is anecdotal evidence that this method doesn't work as effectively for chafer grubs.
Nematodes:
Nematodes aren’t as effective in spring as in autumn as they are already adult larvae so require a double dose. Even then they aren’t always effective so you may need multiple applications. Make sure to follow application guidelines very carefully and store correctly before use as nematodes die easily.
Getting rid of these pests is essential as they feed on the roots and destroy the lawn. Plus birds and other predators attack the lawn to get at them which damage the grass. Once you’ve completed either method and you are satisfied the infestation is dealt with, follow the instructions below. Wait a couple weeks if you’ve used nematodes to give them time to work.
1. Scarify/rake the lawn with a spring tine and get rid of any dead grass to leave exposed soil.
2. Apply The Lawn Pack and follow the aftercare guides as usual. You may want to use The Lawn Pack Plus if you’re not left with much healthy grass after raking.
To break down clay soils and improve waterlogging/drainage, the following will help:
- Topdressing with organic matter (e.g. topsoil, compost) will break down clay soils over time. Topdress once in spring and once in autumn until situation improves.
- Hollow-tine aeration will improve drainage capabilities through reduced compaction. Hollow-tine in spring and autumn until situation improves.
- For serious cases of poor drainage, drainage installations may be necessary.
Newbuild lawns are often an afterthought for developers which can mean poor quality soil/rubble underneath and/or poor quality turf.
Soil health is important for all lawns to thrive and is usually lacking in newbuilds. There are a few things you can do to improve soil nutrition, break down clays and improve soil composition.
Soil nutrition & microbiology:
- Correct fertiliser applications for each season.
- Mycorrhizal fungi-based product application (mycorrhizae are essential for grass health, attaching to the roots, they can increase the surface area for nutrient and water uptake by over 300%).
- Applying humic acids regularly
Break down clay soil and reduce waterlogging:
- Applications of organic matter (e.g. topsoil, compost) will break down clay soils over time.
- Hollow-tine aeration will improve drainage capabilities through reduced compaction.
- For serious cases of poor drainage, drainage installations may be necessary.
Soil composition:
- Topdressing once or twice a year will improve your soil composition and will complement any seeding activities.
Plan of action:
1. Hollow-tine aeration & topdressing over the seed with topsoil or compost (or installing drainage if particularly bad).
2. Apply The Lawn Pack to get your lawn looking back how it should. It also contains Mycorrhizal Fungi Seed Enhancer which is great for newbuild soil. You may need to use the Plus version if your lawn is particularly sparse.
3. Follow our guides for watering and aftercare.
4. Carry out hollow-tine aeration & topdressing in spring and autumn until the drainage/clay situation improves.
5. Apply winter fertiliser in late autumn/winter to strengthen the grass over the colder periods (we have The Winter Pack available for this).
'Weed’ grasses can be identified as they are coarser and a lighter colour to the other grass.
Remove these manually by digging them up. There are no products in the UK which target only these plants so manual removal is the only option.
You will then be left with only healthy grass and exposed soil.
At this point you can apply The Lawn Pack normally and follow the guides for aftercare. You may want to consider the Plus version if you are left with little healthy grass after carrying out the above.
It's worth noting that these grasses blow into your lawn at random from nearby fields and neighbours gardens so it is possible that they will establish in your lawn in the future. You can help prevent them establishing through keeping the lawn thick and healthy by following correct lawn care practices.
If you are not bothered about removing the 'weed' grasses you can rake them up before mowing and it'll make them less obvious.
You can do start from scratch by doing the following:
- Add topsoil or rotovate soil if needed
- Level as best as possible and compact
- Loosen top layer of soil
- Apply The Lawn Pack Plus
- Follow our watering guidelines
There is a lot more info about starting from scratch here.
Application
After any ground preparation is completed, mix the Mycorrhizal Seed Enhancer with the Stronger Roots Grass Seed in the seed bag. Spread across the lawn evenly by hand or using a spreader. If you have applied topdressing/topsoil beforehand then you can rake the seed in gently at this stage and compact gently by treading it in.
After this, apply the Seeding Success Fertiliser ideally using a handheld spreader to make sure of even coverage.
Then mix the Biostimulant Booster with water in a watering can or sprayer at the rates specified on the label. Apply evenly.
Then finally water with a fine spray so the top couple of inches of soil are moist.
After this you can follow our Aftercare Guide for your watering schedule.
More info and all the guides can be found here.
You can use a thin layer of topsoil over the seed, install netting or a germination sheet or you can buy bird deterrents online. You can also try installing moving shiny objects such as shiny tape on sticks or CDs on string.
You can apply iron sulphate after seeding to ‘green-up’ and harden your lawn. This is done at a half dose any time from Week 8 onwards in 4 week intervals. Full details for dilution and application are here.
Our seed is a mix of dwarf ryegrass strains for increased resilience, less maintenance and fast results. 40% is tetraploid ryegrass for extra durability.
